RE: Final Results Chrysler/48RE Drama

As far as how Chrysler and the Stealership responded to the issue no change there, I could not in good faith recommend a Chrysler product after this experience. I have owned many Chrysler vehicles and plenty of non-Chrysler vehicles. I have had problems with dealership service departments (and their factory backing) with several of them. You might find a better service manager at the Chevy dealer, but then 2 years later he/she might be working at the Ford or Honda dealer. It all depends on the people there at the time.

RE: The good people of Sydney NS

You know, after I actually took the time to read the rest of it, it's not bad. But, that first sentence is one of the most painful things I've read in a long time. After my roof blew off while I was in my home, the inside of my home was destroyed by Hurricane Ike, and I am living with my family in a travel trailer. I will be happy to show you painful things to read, such as the Allstate adjuster's report showing that they will only pay for approximately 25% of the cost to rebuild my home. You obviously have way too much time on your hands. To the original poster, I will gladly ignore the grammatical errors. I thought the tone and overall content were exceptional. It is nice to see a company that actually chooses to do the right thing and treat customers in a fair manner, unlike Allstate.

RE: Largest Chevy Dealership Fails-Repair Vehicles Locked Inside

Bill Heard Chevrolet dealerships did not close because of the economy. It was deceptive business practices and false advertising. The BBB has a ton of complaints on them. This is 100% correct. The only problem I have with the closing of Bill Heard Chevrolet in Sugar Land and Landmark Chevrolet in north Houston is that it should have happened 10 years ago.

A 27-foot travel trailer that only weighs 2750 lbs?? Yes, it's a Trailmanor. Do a search for Debian Dog on this forum. He pulls a 3500 lb Trailmanor with a Nissan Quest minivan. Trailmanor

RE: I care less about the law

As my subject says, I care less about the law regarding weights of towing when it comes to Tow Vehicles's and toyhaulers. These morons are jeapordizing their families and the rest of us on the road because they either don't want to spend the extra bucks to make it safe or they think they get better mileage with a truck that can't safely do the job or their just plan cheap. They should be locked up. So you do care enough about the law to suggest locking up people who violate the GCVWR performance rating. But, that is not a law. So, I guess you won't be locking anybody up. A quick review of the 2007 tow guide shows a Dodge Ram 2500 Hemi 2WD with 3.73 gear and manual transmission is rated to tow 9000 lb, and the exact same 2007 Dodge Ram 2500 Hemi 2WD with a 4.10 gear and automatic transmission is rated to tow 11,050 lb. So, the guy who tows 10,000 lb with the 3.73 gear Hemi Ram should be locked up. Well, you are certainly entitled to your opinion. I would prefer that people follow laws such as axle ratings, tire ratings, and especially speed limits. But, that is just my opinion.

RE: Riding out Gustav in a Pop-Up

The local tv stations are prediciting sustanined winds of up to 50mph with higher gusts. Will these things withstand this kind of wind? They might, but it would not be pleasant. We have been in winds in the range of 40-50 mph in Galveston on the beach and it is not fun, at least in my opinion. I'm just glad the hurricane ended up being milder than the prediction. We are still paying the rent for the Katrina evacuees even though that storm was 3 years ago.

RE: Minivan question re: Freestar

I was looking at the specs on the Freestar and the Toyota Seinna and noticed that the toyota gives you one more gear and about 60 more horsepower when compared to the Ford, yet I see people rave about the Ford being the best minivan for towing stuff. For a new van today, the Sienna and the 4.0 6 speed Chrysler vans are probably the best. I bought my Freestar when it was 1 year old, and thankfully they have low resale value so I got it cheap. It has been exceptional, and I would definitely do it again. But, as Caddy said, the Sienna and the 4.0 Mopar vans are the way to go if you need a new one. I actually like my 4 speed auto for towing - third gear is around 2800 RPM at 60 mph loaded down with 4 bikes on the trailer tongue rack, and no transmission hunting.

RE: '08 Dodge Turck Deals

A coworker is in the process right now of purchasing a new 2008 Dodge Ram 1500 ST, 2WD, short bed regular cab V6 automatic. Window sticker is $24,500, and he is getting it for 50% off MSRP (plus tax, title, and license tags). I believe the drive out the door amount is around $13,500 which includes the TT&L.

RE: Mexico confiscating American visitors' diesel trucks?

But going south of the border for me means heading into the US of A and I hear they have lots of strange laws too, and even let citizens carry handguns. You never know when one of those evil handguns will just start randomly shooting itself off. Come on Fort Kent, stay on topic.

RE: Nice write up on the '09 Ram 1500's

Nice write up. I was initially a little surprised that they are offering both the quad cab with small doors and the full crew cab. But, I guess it makes sense since some people compare the quad cab to the "extended cab" models from Ford and Chevy. Thanks for the link.

RE: How many people have downsized their TV?

The 2500/3500 Hemi does not have the MDS. Therefore worse mileage. Yes, that was originally the case. But, I think starting in 2006 or maybe 2007 (??) they did have the MDS in the Hemi in HD models. It is listed for 2008 on their web site. Select 5.7 Hemi at this link.Hemi MDS 2500

RE: Tow speed

Even though my wife complains that we are going too slow, I tow at 58-60 mph for fuel economy reasons and safety reasons.

RE: New 2008 Dodge with the 6.7 Diesel or the 5.7 Hemi

MDS isn't available in the HD 5.7L Hemi powered Rams. Neither is chest hair. Hannibal, I could very well be wrong, but I think MDS did become available on HD 5.7 Hemi engines starting in 2006(??). The web site does list it for 2008.MDS on 2500 Hemi But, you are correct on the chest hair. It is not listed as an option.

RE: How many miles on your sparkplugs?

I think I might replace the points, condenser, distributor rotor and fuel filter while I'm at it.:W:B Don't forget about the cap, Rubi, and check the reluctor while you're at it. At least you can actually find the plugs on that 390 (or is it a 360?).

RE: Towing OVER capacity..... too many doing this....

Wow! 26 MPG on the highway and 17 towing into a headwind with your Freestar. 19-20 MPG in normal towing. Consumer Reports got 11 MPG in town, 25 MPG on the highway, but only 20 MPG on a 150 trip. They also only averaged 17 MPG overall. Sorry that it bothers you Steve, but my fuel economy is almost identical to what Jimmy has reported.

RE: GM's new Hybrid Truck

I can't see getting excited about a truck that gets 21/22 MPG. I'm getting 19 with a 3/4 ton with a lot more hauling potential. Hybrids really shine in stop and go city driving, shutting off the gas engine at stop lights, even starting off from a stop pulling the trailer up to 15 mph using only the electric motor. It's not meant to replace a HD 2500 or 3500 pickup. It's meant to allow 1/2 ton owners who generally just haul air the option of continuing to drive a full size pickup and tow modest trailers while saving gas. Highway MPG in a hybrid is usually only slightly better than a similar conventional gas model. At least GM is doing something and offering it right now. If GM did not offer it, everyone would accuse them of being out of touch with their customers and ask why they are not offering hybrid models of popular vehicles.

RE: 2009 XFE GM pickups (Xtra Fuel Economy)

I wonder if the XFE trucks will actually get better than the 21mpg. This past weekend my Suburban averaged 22.3mpg at 65mph coming home from northern Michigan. I almost always get better than EPA ratings on my vehicles, but the point is not to compare what different drivers get under an infinite number of different driving conditions. The point is to just compare EPA numbers to EPA numbers - at least there is (supposedly) a standard consistent practice followed by the EPA in obtaining those numbers.

RE: 2009 XFE GM pickups (Xtra Fuel Economy)

If you don't like the 3.08 ratio, then don't buy it. Making your EPA fuel economy rating go up 7% is better than having it go down. At least GM is trying to do something. If GM did not do this, everyone would be asking why GM did not do something to improve their economy a little bit on their existing models while waiting for new technology to be ready. They also have a model of the Chevy Cobalt called XFE that gets higher fuel economy as well (came out during the 2008 model year).

RE: Minivan towing target dry weight of new trailer

Being able to pull it is one thing. How about stopping it in an emergency at 60 mph? Will the minivan, any minivan, handle it? Yes, that's why you have trailer brakes. That's also why people have trailer brakes on larger trailers towed by diesel dually pickups. A 1 ton dually will not stop a 14,000 lb fifth wheel very well without trailer brakes.

RE: USA Today: Chrysler hybrids near front of pack

All of the OEMs are wasting their time/money making hybrids out of SUVs. Think about it, what vehicle alone would make the best hybrid? A minivan. Hybrid technology is based on systems that require a lot of braking in order to recharge the batteries. What other vehicle makes more stops than a soccer-mom's minivan? You have a good point, but since many soccer moms prefer to be seen in cool SUV's instead of minivans, the OEM's are trying to build what people want (or at least what they have wanted in the past). GM tries to market the Tahoe hybrid by advertising that the 2008 2WD Tahoe hybrid gets the same EPA city fuel economy rating as the 2008 4 cylinder Toyota Camry sedan (21 mpg city for both as per www.fueleconomy.gov). I agree, though, that a minivan would be a good starting platform for the hybrid technology. A conventional 2008 3.3 liter Dodge Grand Caravan is rated at 17 city 24 highway, so one would think that a hybrid version would get great fuel economy in a useful package. But, minivans are not cool, don't forget.
